A Recall Alert: Super Greens Diet Supplement Powder Linked to Salmonella Outbreak
A recent health scare has left at least 45 individuals across 21 states, including Iowa, affected by a salmonella outbreak linked to the Super Greens diet supplement powder. This incident has raised concerns among health authorities and consumers alike, prompting a nationwide recall of the affected products.
The Superfoods Inc. brand, known for its Live it Up-brand Super Greens powder, has issued a voluntary recall of its original and wild berry flavors with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028. The company is urging consumers to refrain from consuming, selling, or serving these products and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
The illnesses associated with the supplement were reported between August 22 and December 30, 2025, with at least 12 individuals requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, no fatalities have been attributed to this outbreak, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The affected products were distributed across the United States, with reported cases in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. The FDA's ongoing investigation suggests that additional products may be contaminated, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and prompt action.
Salmonella poisoning, a common foodborne illness, typically manifests within hours or days of consuming contaminated food. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most individuals recover without medical intervention within a week, the illness can be severe in young children under 5, adults aged 65 and older, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
This recall serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of food safety and the potential risks associated with dietary supplements. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions to protect their health and well-being.
