In the high-stakes world of football transfers, one name has been making waves: Alex Scott. But here's where it gets controversial—while Manchester United has set their sights on this rising star, it’s their cross-city rivals, Manchester City, who may have already stolen a march, thanks to none other than Pep Guardiola. And this is the part most people miss: Guardiola’s admiration for Scott isn’t just professional—it’s personal, and it’s even won over Scott’s mum.
Back in early 2023, a then-19-year-old Scott faced Guardiola’s Manchester City side in an FA Cup match for Bristol City. Despite the age and experience gap, Scott’s performance left an indelible mark on Guardiola, who later described the central midfielder as “an unbelievable player.” For a manager widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, such praise is nothing short of a career-defining moment. But is Guardiola’s endorsement enough to sway Scott’s future?
Adding fuel to the fire, Jack Grealish also hailed Scott as a “top, top talent” at the time. Fast forward to 2026, and Scott, now 22, has only solidified his reputation. His £25 million move to Bournemouth under Andoni Iraola has seen him become a cornerstone of their midfield, with performances that have caught the eye of several Premier League giants, including both Manchester clubs.
In a 2024 interview, Scott revealed just how much Guardiola’s words meant to him—and his family. “To hear that from who I regard as one of the best managers of all time, it’s a good feeling. It was amazing,” Scott said. “My mum enjoyed it probably even more than me!” But here’s the question: Could Guardiola’s admiration be the deciding factor in Scott’s next move, or will United’s persistence pay off?
Scott’s respect for Guardiola runs deep. Growing up, he was inspired by Guardiola’s iconic tenure at Barcelona, where he managed legends like Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta. “That whole team was just incredible,” Scott recalled. He also acknowledged Guardiola’s ability to elevate players, citing examples like Thiago at Bayern Munich and Rodri at Manchester City, whom Scott considers one of the Premier League’s best.
Yet, Manchester United remains determined to secure Scott’s signature, making midfield signings their top priority for 2026. With Michael Carrick at the helm as interim manager, the club is expected to make significant moves in the summer transfer window, with names like Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, Joao Gomes, and Carlos Baleba also in the mix. But is Scott the missing piece United needs, or is he destined for a reunion with Guardiola?
Scott’s rise hasn’t gone unnoticed internationally either. His first senior England call-up by Thomas Tuchel in November 2025 marked another milestone in his burgeoning career. If United can fend off competition and secure his services, they may well be signing a future Three Lions star.
What do you think? Is Alex Scott a better fit for Manchester United’s ambitions, or should he join Guardiola at Manchester City? Let us know in the comments!
