Get ready for an exciting development in the world of sports and entertainment! The construction of Calgary's new $1.2 billion event center, Scotia Place, is well underway, and it's set to be a game-changer for the city and the NHL.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, along with Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and the Calgary Flames ownership, recently toured the construction site, and they're all raving about what's to come.
"This arena is going to be incredible," Commissioner Bettman exclaimed. "It's further along than it looks from the outside. There's a lot of work happening below the ground that you can't see. I was surprised by the progress!"
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, thought-provoking. The Commissioner also highlighted the extensive research and study that went into designing this new arena, taking into account the best practices from other NHL arenas.
"They've really done their homework," he said. "The new arena is twice as large as the current Saddledome, with more bathrooms and amenities. It's been well-planned and will serve its purposes exceptionally well."
And this is the part most people miss: Scotia Place is in the running to host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey! While a decision hasn't been finalized yet, Commissioner Bettman confirmed that Calgary and Edmonton have made a joint bid.
"It's a strong bid that people should be proud of," he said. "We're still evaluating and finalizing details, but an announcement should be coming soon."
If Scotia Place does host World Cup games, Commissioner Bettman believes Calgary will excel as a host city.
"Calgary knows how to welcome visitors. With its passionate fan base and the success of events like the Stampede, it's a terrific city to visit and an ideal location for a major sporting event."
So, what do you think? Are you excited about the prospect of this new arena and its potential to host international sporting events? Do you agree with Commissioner Bettman's assessment? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
