Democracy in Action: Unveiling Kerala's Voter List
In a significant move, the Election Commission has released the draft voter list for Kerala's ongoing SIR (Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls) exercise. This marks a crucial step towards ensuring an inclusive and transparent electoral process. But here's where it gets controversial: the current voter registration rate among the youth, aged 18-30, is alarmingly low, standing at just 60% of eligible voters.
Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Khelkar announced that the commission has successfully recollected 91.35% of enumeration forms. This is a positive step, but the low youth participation rate raises concerns. Mr. Khelkar emphasized the need to address this gap, stating that special awareness campaigns will be launched to engage school and college students.
The hearings for objections and claims regarding the draft list will commence immediately and continue for a month, ending on January 22, 2026. This provides an opportunity for citizens to ensure their names are correctly included in the electoral rolls.
However, the low youth turnout is a cause for concern. Why is it that young adults, who are often the most passionate about change, are not registering to vote? Is it a lack of awareness, apathy, or something else?
