Fabio Quartararo's Yamaha V4 Struggles: Sepang MotoGP Test Analysis (2026)

Fabio Quartararo's Yamaha V4 Struggles at Sepang MotoGP Test: A Deep Dive

The 2021 MotoGP world champion, Fabio Quartararo, faced a challenging reality check during the Sepang MotoGP test, where his Yamaha V4 bike fell short of expectations. Before the test even began, Quartararo had already expressed concerns about the bike's competitiveness, feeling it was 'super far' from its rivals.

The technical issue that sidelined the M1s on day two only confirmed his fears. Quartararo's performance on the opening day was a stark reminder of the challenges Yamaha faces in the MotoGP world.

A Slow Start

Quartararo finished the opening day in ninth place, 0.851 seconds behind the reigning world champion, Marc Marquez, on the Ducati. This was a significant gap, and the next best Yamaha rider, Jack Miller, was in 14th place.

"Of course, I cannot say I’m confident because we see how much we suffer, we see that our lap times are not very good," Quartararo said. "But the only thing I can do is do my best, try to ride at my maximum and whatever the position is, try to make the best I can."

The V4's Technical Shortcomings

Despite his Inline4 Yamaha experience, Quartararo denied needing more time to adapt to the V4. He quickly identified areas for improvement, including turning, traction, electronics, grip, and power.

"There is still work to do, especially on the turning, on the traction, on the electronics, on the grip, on the power. So there are many things to adjust," he explained.

Pace and Performance

Quartararo's pace was not up to par, even with a broken finger. His best lap time was 1m 57.869s, which was 11.7 km/h slower than Enea Bastianini's KTM on day one. This highlighted the V4's need for more outright performance.

Top Speed Analysis

Interestingly, Quartararo's top speed of 333.3 km/h was consistent across all five of his best top speeds, suggesting rev-limiting. This was a notable contrast to the slight variations in top speed typically seen due to factors like slipstreams and corner exit traction.

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges, Yamaha's concession status allows for ongoing engine design modifications and private testing with race riders. Quartararo's return to the V4 is set for the Buriram test from February 21-22, where he will have the opportunity to address these issues and improve the bike's performance.
