In a heartwarming tale, a brother and sister from Durham are gearing up for their first Christmas together, a celebration made possible by not one, but two, life-saving bone marrow transplants.
The odds were stacked against them, with only a 25% chance of siblings being a match, but Ben Buttley and his sister Holly Murdey defied the odds.
Ben, now 41, recalls the initial signs of illness as a strange feeling, almost like a hangover. At first, he brushed it off, but concerned strangers on the street noticed his unusual complexion.
After seeking medical help in 2018, Ben was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare condition where the body stops producing white blood cells, leaving him with no immune system and vulnerable to infection.

After the first transplant, Ben returned to his job as a bank manager and enjoyed a period of good health. But last year, the transplant began to fail, and Ben developed sepsis, putting him in intensive care and in desperate need of another transplant.
Once again, Holly was there, providing the "magic" that saved her brother's life.
"Without that second transplant, I wouldn't be here," Ben says. "This Christmas feels like a miracle."
For Ben, the prospect of a normal Christmas after years of fear and uncertainty is extraordinary.
"I'm so excited. To have everyone around me, worry-free and enjoying the moment, is a blessing."
Holly's perspective on life has also transformed.
"It's a reminder to live every moment to the fullest. Life is precious, and we should cherish every second."
