Get ready for a chilly surprise! Central Florida's theme parks, accustomed to battling scorching heat, torrential rain, and wild storms, are now bracing for an unusual intruder: freezing temperatures. But wait, how does the cold affect roller coasters? It's a fascinating yet little-known fact that the icy conditions can indeed put a damper on the thrills.
According to Daniel Leavelle, a ride installer and publisher for Midway Mayhem, "Rides prefer balmy conditions. When temperatures drop, everything moves at a slower pace, and it takes extra effort to get them running smoothly." This is particularly true for roller coasters with polyurethane wheels, as Rob McNicholas, Vice President of Operations at SeaWorld Orlando, explains. "In the cold, these wheels tighten up, creating more friction and slowing down the ride. We might even need to swap out the wheels, following manufacturer guidelines." As a result, some coasters, like SeaWorld's Kracken, are currently sporting different wheels to combat the cold.
SeaWorld's coasters won't start rolling until the mercury hits a specific degree, as McNicholas reveals. "It's not as simple as pressing 'go.' We perform thorough system checks in the morning and only when temperatures reach 40 degrees can we begin cycling the trains." But don't let this deter your theme park plans! Experts advise visitors to embrace the indoor attractions, like the Seven Seas Food Festival and concerts, which continue regardless of the weather.
And here's a fun fact: Walt Disney World ensures cast members stay cozy with layered costumes during cooler weather, while animals enjoy climate-controlled indoor spaces. Disney also encourages guests to use the My Disney Experience App or website for weather-related updates.
As for water parks, SeaWorld's Aquatica, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, and Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay are temporarily closing their doors due to the cold snap, with reopening dates to be determined.
