Britain's Oldest Cheerleaders Shine at Watford Event | Inspiring Retirement Group Performance (2026)

In a heartwarming display of spirit and camaraderie, a group that proudly claims to be Britain's oldest cheerleading team has successfully held its inaugural public performance in Watford.

The Mayfield Bells, a vibrant collective composed entirely of women aged between 70 and 87 from Mayfield Retirement Village, took to the stage with enthusiasm and flair. Their journey began when Marilyn Sylvester, who will celebrate her 82nd birthday in January, was inspired by the 2019 film "Poms" starring Diane Keaton, which tells the story of retired women forming a cheerleading squad.

On Saturday, the team donned cheerful black Santa hats and brandished pom-poms as they presented their routine to an audience at the Harlequin shopping center.

Reflecting on her inspiration, Ms. Sylvester shared, "As soon as the movie ended, I thought, why can’t we do this? And here we are, making it happen!" She emphasized the importance of pursuing new interests at any age, highlighting the joy and health benefits that come from laughter and engaging activities. "It’s never too late to start a new hobby, and we have so much fun together—laughter truly is the best medicine."

With a mere eight weeks for rehearsals, the squad was thrilled when BBC Three Counties Radio offered them a platform to showcase their hard work at the shopping center. Initially nervous about attendance, the team was delighted to see a crowd gather, with many shoppers stopping to capture the moment on their smartphones.

After their performance, Ms. Sylvester expressed her exhilaration and emotional fulfillment: "I’m just overjoyed by how well it turned out. Who would have imagined that such a sentimental idea could gain so much attention and attract an audience? It feels like we might just be on the verge of something special."

When asked about the prospect of auditioning for "Britain's Got Talent," she humorously remarked, "There are some pretty questionable acts on that show; we’d fit right in! Who knows, maybe we could even win!"

This delightful story raises an intriguing question: What does it mean to redefine aging and pursue passions later in life? Have you ever considered starting something new regardless of your age? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
